12-year-old dies after cyclone shelter gate collapses on him
- Berhampur: A 12-year-old boy was killed after an iron gate of a cyclone shelter center collapsed and fell on him at Tulasipur village under Khallikote police station in Ganjam district on Saturday evening. The deceased was identified as Pabitra Pahan, son of Karuna Pahan of Tulasipur. He was a Class V student in the local school.
- Pabitra and his friends were playing near the shelter home when the gate collapsed and fell on him. He was rushed to the community health centre Khallikote,where doctors declared him dead. Police said they have registered an unnatural death case and started an investigation. Locals alleged the gate collapsed due to substandard work done by the contractor. "We had complained to the block administration during the construction of the cyclone shelter. But they did not take it seriously," said a villager.
- Rabindra Kumar Mishra, a human rights activist requested the NHRC to direct the state government to pay at least Rs 50 lakh compensation to the family members of the deceased.
