  • Bhubaneswar: Biswa Bhusan Harichandan (88), who will replace Anusuiya Uikey as Chhattisgarh governor, expects his new assignment to be as smooth as the one he had in Andhra Pradesh. On Sunday, Harichandan's appointment was finalized by President Droupadi Murmu.
  • The development assumes significance in the wake of frequent conflicts between the Congress led Bhupesh Baghel government in Chhattisgarh and Uikey in the past.
  • Baghel took to Twitter to congratulate Harichandan. He also stated "I personally treat her (Uikey) as my elder sister. I will always be pained that the BJP did not allow her to act according to her conscience and sentiments."
  • Speaking to a regional news channel, Harichandan, a former BJP politician from Odisha, said he expects the same cooperation from the Chhattisgarh government as he had received in Andhra Pradesh, where he went as governor in 2019. "I am optimistic of discharging my constitutional responsibilities smoothly in Chhattisgarh. It will be a loss for the state government if they do not cooperate with the government." Harichandan said.
  • Harichandan was elected to the state assembly five times and had served as a minister during the tenures of Nilamani Rout ray (1977- 80), Biju Patnaik (1990-95) and his son Naveen Patnaik from 2000 to 2009 when the BJD and BJP were allies.
  • He was twice elected to the assembly from Chilka constituency on a Janata Dal ticket and thrice as a BJP nominee from the Bhubaneswar assembly seat.
