  • Sambalpur: The Bargarh administration has asked government employees to wear Sambalpuri attire on Mondays to promote and popularize the local hand- loom weave.
  • District collector Monisha Banerjee issued a letter to the assistant collectors, office superintendents, all district-level officers, officers of all line departments, sub-collector of Bargarh and Padampur which stated that those who have to follow an official dress code do not need to wear Sambalpuri attire on Mondays.
  • Banerjee said thousands of weavers who pro- duce the beautiful Sambalpuri fabric are from Bargarh district. "The fabric produced by them, are appreciated across the country. We have just taken a step to encourage the weavers. But it is not mandatory for the employees," she said.
  • Sources said 12,509 families of Bargarh district earn their livelihood from weaving.
  • "Since Bargarh is home to weavers, the order of the administration will be a big boost for them. It will also help in increasing the sale of Sambalpuri fabrics," said Ashis Meher of Bargarh district, who is doing his PhD on weavers in Central University, Tamil Nadu.
