Woman hurt in acid attack by husband

  • Balasore: A 25-year-old woman suffered serious burns following an acid attack by her husband at Bhimpur village under Sahadevkhunta police station limits in Balasore district on Monday for refusing to stay with him after discovering that he was already married and is a father of two children. Three others, including two children, also sustained burn injuries in the incident.
  • The victim was identified as Banita Singh of Bhimpura. Other injured are Banita's elder sister Barsha Singh, 27, and Barsha's 8- month-old son and six-year- old daughter.
  • Balasore SP Sagarika Nath said she is monitoring the probe and is in touch with the doctors for the victim's treatment. "We have identified the accused. A manhunt is on. He will be arrested soon," she said.
  • Police said Chandan Rana, 28, of Santaragadia village married Banita about two months ago. However, just after five days of marriage, Banita came to know that her husband was already married and is the father of two children. She refused to live with Chandan.
  • Banita had recently filed a complaint with Sahadevkhunta police station. In a village meeting last month, Banita refused to stay with her husband and started living with her sister in Bhimpura.
  • On Monday morning, Chandan barged into the victims' house at Bhimapur village and hurled acid on his wife. While she has suffered critical injuries, the other three who were near her sustained minor injuries.
  • Family members rushed them to Balasore district headquarters hospital. Banita, who is critical, was shifted to SCB Medical College and Hospital, Cuttack.
