A Big Cat Looks Back with Gratitude - And Ahead with Concern

  • Tha Tiger that almost became our story after years of trophy hunting and shikar. But fortunately, Tiger Zinda Hai. We owe that largely to Project Tiger, a national project dedicated entirely to the protection and conservation of my tribe that is turning 50 today.
  • It's good to celebrate anniversaries. Baby steps of 1973 got consolidated over the years. There are many we wish to thank, and the list is long. So, I will just say, Thank You India.
  • But there's a worrying part, too. To be honest, we are being looked after well but don't have enough space to live. Our green highways are being hacked leaving us abandoned in little forest-islands.
  • We are getting in your way, and you are getting in ours. And no one wants that. Things could get worse. There may just not be enough of us in the wild in the future. One day, the zoo might be our permanent residence.
  • If you love us, take positive steps to create more wild space for us. If you are not aware of what the future holds for us, read what experts have to say in TOI in the coming weeks.
  • Yours sincerely, Sheru
